This position is located at the Twin Ports Outpatient Clinic through the VA Medical Center in Minneapolis. The position provides clinical support in a wide variety of ancillary activities in the Ambulatory Care Outpatient Clinic. The incumbent is responsible for independently providing assistance to the Physician, Physician Assistant. Registered Nurses and other Clinical Staff throughout POC. Duties may include: Performs venipuncture collection of specimens. Performs STAT duties. Performs tests expediently in emergent situations, which include phlebotomy, spirometry and EKG. Performs order entry and accessioning of test orders in the computer system, which consists of a number of steps. Ranks patients in priority order phlebotomy, EKG and Spirometry Performs electrocardiogram testing which includes programming the EKG machine for each individual patient, applying leads to the correct anatomical position to obtain a correct and accurate reading, and maintaining accurate records of tests for future reference and retrieval for comparisons. Performs spirometry testing which includes assembling equipment and obtaining calculations for predicted means, Forced Expiratory Volume (FEV). percentage and flow rates. Observes patient tolerance and implements emergent actions if necessary. Reports status of patient to appropriate staff in a timely manner Provides support to clinic tale-medicine programs, including data collection (VS, Ht., Wt., check-in and hands on support to the tele-medicine provider) Assists with tele medicine exams as needed, providing hands on care as directed by the tele-medicine provider. Instructs patients regarding tests such as the collection of random urine samples, Ova and parasites. stool cultures, occult blood, and 24hour urine collections. Processes and prepares test samples for shipping to MVAMC for later testing, using universal blood and bodily fluid precautions and lab and regulatory procedures for processing bio hazard materials for transport. Performs daily checks of crash carts, defibrillators, EKG machine, medication refrigerator temps and other bio-medical instrumentation requiring routine checks/maintenance. Removes from service any malfunctioning equipment/item, and reports malfunction or suspected malfunction to the appropriate person. Orders and stocks all clinic supplies (BDR, exam and procedure/treatment rooms, sterile supply closets, laundry). Monitors stock levels, prepares orders and checks for outdated supplies on a regular basis, removing from circulating stock any outdated items. Keeps these areas clean, organized and in compliance with EOC, safety and infection control policies and standards. Completes BLS training and responds to and assists as directed during medical emergencies in the clinic. Safely escorts/transports patients on gurneys and wheelchairs. Provides support to the nursing and admin staff as directed, assisting at the front and team desks, with phone calls, lab and radiology reports management and performs patient care tasks at the direction of the nursing staff. Follows safe and healthful practices including universal blood and body substance precautions. Complies with Medical Center and clinic specific safety and health standards, rules, and regulations Reports unsafe/unhealthy practices and conditions immediately to the appropriate supervisor for corrective action. Immediately reports all accidents, near accidents, injuries, work related illnesses, other emergencies that the employee is involved in to the appropriate supervisor. Safely modifies the routine approach to a situation based upon individual circumstances. Meets the needs of customers while supporting VA missions. Consistently communicates and treats customers (veterans, their representatives, visitors, volunteers and all VA staff) in a courteous, tactful and respectful manner. Provides the customer with consistent information according to established policies and procedures. Handles conflict and problems in dealing with the customer constructively and appropriately. In the performance of official duties, the employee has regular access to printed and electronic files containing sensitive data. The employee will comply with all policies, procedures and standards related to protecting patient privacy and information security. The employee is responsible for 1) protecting PII data from unauthorized release or from loss, alteration, or unauthorized deletion and 2) following applicable regulations and instructions regarding access to electronic files and records.
