Position Summary:

Provide direct patient care under the guidelines and protocols provided by the UNMH Rapid Response Medical Director. Identify patients who are in need or will benefit from higher level of care and help implement that care to reduce mortality in the hospital. Operate within the scope of practice as defined by the New Mexico Bureau of Emergency Medical Services and any UNMH approved Rapid Response special skills. Work in conjunction with all UNMH staff to assist with in-patient, out-patient, visitor, and employee care. Help and facilitate transfer of patients to or from UNMH to any facility necessary for patient care and allowed by regulatory bodies. Function as a patient advocate while ensuring adherence to hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Patient care assignment may include; Neonate, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult and Geriatric Age Groups.
Accountability:
TEAM RESPONSE - Work in conjunction with Rapid Response Paramedics to respond with multiple teams across the hospital complex to include, but not limited to, the DR. Heart team, the Stroke Alert Team, the DART Team, and the Sepsis Response Team; provide essential rapid communication and act as a patient care advocate/ liaison between multiple departments to decrease patient mortality and improve patient outcomes TRANSPORT - Transport patients to and from UNMH utilizing ALS measures to ensure patient and provider safety; under guidance of medical direction, perform patient assessment and provide necessary interventions; responsible for maintaining and stocking ambulance to fulfill all regulatory requirements PATIENT CARE - Provide basic life support up to advanced life support to include defibrillation/cardio version, oral/nasal endotracheal intubation, medication administration, needle thoracotomy, surgical cricothyrotomy, deep suctioning, interosseous catheter Insertion, perform/interpret 12-lead EKG's and chemical blood glucose tests PATIENT CARE - Perform patient care; work autonomously to stabilize patients and guide care until providers arrive; triage emergency care (outpatient response on hospital property to emergency department); stabilize and/or prepare patient for transport; document all patient care activities; assessment of test results and laboratory values for purpose of adjusting patient therapy; respond to hospital non-patient emergencies PATIENT CARE - Perform ultrasound guided peripheral venous puncture, blood draws, arterial blood gas, and IV fluid therapy, drug administration and other skills providers may request PATIENT CARE - Administer intramuscular and subcutaneous injections, topical application, sublingual and intravenous administration of medications via the seven rights; provide for nebulized drug administration; document and communicate clinical findings ENVIRONMENT - Maintain a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients/families in accordance with Hospitals standards EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES - Monitor and stock supply areas; maintain equipment as appropriate MEETINGS - Attend education sessions, department and other meetings as appropriate CUSTOMER/STAFF RELATIONS - Establish and maintain good rapport and effective working relationships with patients, visitors, physicians and Hospital employees QUALITY - Participate in department quality programs ORIENTATION - Assist in orienting new employees as required DEVELOPMENT - Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reading current literature, attending in-services, meetings and workshops PATIENT SAFETY 1 - Follow patient safety-related policies, procedures and protocols PATIENT SAFETY 2 - Demonstrate proactive approach to patient safety by seeking opportunities to improve patient safety through questioning of current policies and processes PATIENT SAFETY 3 - Identify and report/correct environmental conditions and/or situations that may put a patient at undue risk PATIENT SAFETY 4 - Report potential or actual patient safety concerns, medical errors and/or near misses in a timely manner PATIENT SAFETY 5 - Encourage patients to actively participate in their own care by asking questions and reporting treatment or situations that they don't understand or may "not seem right"
Education Requirements:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent
Experience Requirements:
2 years directly related experience
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
Licensure as an EMT-P by the New Mexico Emergency Medical Services Board CPR Certification for Healthcare/BLS Providers or for Professional Rescuers Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certification Valid New Mexico Driver's License UNM Vehicle Operators Permit w/i 60 days of position CEVO course within 3 months of position UNMH Basic Arrhythmia Course within 3 months of position Arterial Blood Gas course within 3 months of position
Education Requirements - Preferred:
Associate or Bachelor's degree in EMS
Experience Requirements - Preferred:
3 years directly related experience
Physical Demands Requirements:
Heavy Work: Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects or people. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work.
Licensure/Certification Requirements - Preferred:
Nationally Registered Paramedic License Critical Care Paramedic
Professional licensure as appropriate to the clinical objectives of the unit:
Critical Care Paramedic Nationally Registered Paramedic License
Testing Requirements:
Tuberculin Skin Test required annually
Working Conditions Requirements:
Sig Haz: Physical risk, injuries due to combative patient behavior Sig Hazard: Chemicals, bio hazardous materials requiring extensive safety precautions and may require protective equipment May require driving on/off UNMH grounds, traffic/ vehicle exposure Response areas will include outdoor weather exposures; to include outside of hospital response and transport with exposure to outdoor response conditions; rain, ice, wind, snow and sun exposures possible Subject to random alcohol and substance testing
