Certified Pacemaker Cardiac Technician
The Pacemaker Technician is a member of an interprofessional team providing care to patients with cardiac implanted electrical devices (CIED) within a patient and family centered model of care. Within the Device Clinic, the clinician will work in collaboration with Registered Nurses (i.e., RN and RN-EC), Physicians, and the patient/family in the assessment, planning and delivery of safe and quality patient care.
Diagnostic / Cardiac Device Procedures
Prepares and assesses patient (e.g., identification, consent, medical/lifestyle history, instruction of procedure).
Performs diagnostic procedures such as electrocardiograms (ECG) and pacemaker analysis/ reprogramming.
Evaluates lead placement using Programmable System Analyzer (PSA) during device implantation and troubleshoots.
Monitors patient during and following procedures (e.g., ECG, blood pressure, comfort level, lead malfunctions).
Analyzes test results; identifying abnormal/unexpected values and alerts physician and Nurse Practitioner as appropriate.
Prepares, organizes, processes and documents test results.
Cardiac Device Assessment and Programming
Performs sensing and capture threshold tests in atrium or ventricle(s).
Analyzes diagnostics and real time (electrograms) telemetry.
Responsible to verifies appropriate pacemaker/Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD)/Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy (CRT) function for inpatients and preoperatively.
Manages pacing systems that are subject to alerts, advisories and recalls according to the Heart Rhythms Society (HRS).
Prepares, communicates and files test results and reports.
Prepares statistical reports.
Disposes of biohazardous waste, as per hospital procedures and policies.
Registered member of the Canadian Society of Cardiology Technologists (CSCT); Graduate of Applied Health Sciences program – Cardiovascular Technology Diploma
Successful, or demonstrated commitment towards, completion of the Certification Examination for Competency in Cardiac Rhythm Device Therapy for Allied Health Professionals
Minimum of two (2) years’ experience working in the areas of Heart Rhythm/Pacemaker and Device Clinic with the ability to display advanced clinical assessment and analytical skills
Functional knowledge of computer technology and able to adapt readily to rapid changes in new technologies
Strong background in cardiovascular physiology and rhythm interpretation.
Commitment to continuing education to ensure maintenance of competencies and current best practice in device management
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Must have a level of physical fitness to perform the essential duties of the position which include standing for long periods and wearing lead aprons
Demonstrates the values of TEHN
Good work and attendance record required
